IMPROVING YOUR WATER SUPPLY IN BARKING

Essex & Suffolk Water has an excellent reputation and we are continually looking to improve the services we provide to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.

As part of this commitment, we are investing hundreds of millions of pounds on further improvements to drinking water and on protecting the environment. We will therefore be upgrading 2.1 kilometres of old water pipes at a cost of £400,000 in the area of Keir Hardy Way in Barking.

This improvement work will start at the very end of August 2017 with the vast majority of the work to be completed in November 2017.

The area of streets that we shall be working in can be seen within the black line in the map below.

To reduce the impact of the work, we shall be using wherever possible underground techniques of working that avoid digging long open trenches. Instead, small holes will be spaced at intervals along each street.

New pipes will mainly be installed using techniques such as ‘pipe bursting. This is where the old pipe is broken up underground and the new pipe is pulled in to the same space to replace it. We shall also be using ‘pipe insertion’ where the new pipe is pulled along instead the old one.

We will then also replace the existing property service pipes and external control boxes from the water mains to the property boundary within the public highway. This will involve some additional holes to enable the new service pipes and control boxes to be installed.

Whichever method we use, we shall provide alternative water supplies where requested and possible and disinfect the pipes on completion. The streets and paths where we have excavated will then be resurfaced and retuned to normal as quickly as possible.

At the times when we do have to interrupt the water supply, these interruptions will be as short as possible and no longer than 3 hours. The majority of these interruptions will take place on week days between Monday and Friday between 9am and 12 o’clock lunchtime. A minimum of 48 hours warning will be given for any planned interruption to water supplies.
