The construction phase of this project is now complete.
There may still be updates, so the project will remain here. We are still monitoring the project and will reply to any comments. So if you have any questions please feel free to comment or contact us here.
Over the winter of 2017/18, Essex & Suffolk Water, in partnership with Essex Waterways, will be replacing the sea lock gate and central timber mitre gates at Heybridge Basin in Essex. The project will involve the closing and draining of the lock in October 2017, crane lifting operations for the gates and the assembly and testing of the new gates prior to the re-opening of the lock in March 2018. There will be disruption in the area during this work period but we will endeavour to keep this to an absolute minimum.
Typical working hours will be between 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Saturday. There will occasionally be work carried out on Sundays and outside of these typical hours but we will provide advance notice of these days and times.
The various construction activities will generate some noise and disruption in the immediate vicinity. Traffic volumes will increase at times for the delivery of materials and construction plant to the site. A crane will be operating in the works area to lift the gate elements and construction materials into the lock. To facilitate the crane positioning, some of the existing hand railing around the lock will be temporarily removed.
The project overall will be an exciting and interesting event with lots to see and learn so please do ask questions or raise any concern with any site staff should you have any.
The construction traffic will make use of the lock access road. We will re-grade the road on completion of the works and make some temporary improvements during the construction period.
The footpath outside the lock keeper’s cottage will be fully reinstated following the completion of the works.
We shall endeavour to maintain vehicular access to your property throughout the duration of the works. There will be times when vehicle access will be restricted but we will provide advanced notice to the affected residents.
Please speak to any of the team if you have any particular concern or needs with regards access.
Pedestrian access shall be maintained at all times although there will be some local diversions in place for safety reasons.
There will be a period when pedestrian access across the upstream mitre gates will not be possible due to them being taken out and replaced.
Pedestrian access to the public houses, tea rooms, other local businesses, sea-wall and tow path walkways will be maintained at all times. Vehicular access will occasionally be disrupted but this will be kept to a minimum and advanced notice will be given for any planned events. Any local diversions in place for safety reasons will be communicated as necessary. The lock itself will be closed for through traffic (boats) from the 1 November 2016 through to the 31 March 2017.
We will keep you informed with progress of the work on this website. We will hold a public information event during the summer of 2016 when you will be able to meet the team who will answer any question you have about the project and how it affect you.
Please also feel free to approach any of the site workers or Essex Waterways staff who will be able to help with any query.
The site will be operated by our fully competent contractor working to tight health and safety standards. Working areas will be securely fenced off from public access at all times.
There will be some dangerous operations undertaken such as the crane lifts but these are fully assessed and managed in advance of and during the operations. We do ask that everyone respects the site fencing, signing, guarding and instructions of our team when required for your own safety.
