Heybridge

Over the winter of 2017/18, Essex & Suffolk Water, in partnership with Essex Waterways, will be replacing the sea lock gate and central timber mitre gates at Heybridge Basin in Essex. The project will involve the closing and draining of the lock in October 2017, crane lifting operations for the gates and the assembly and testing of the new gates prior to the re-opening of the lock in March 2018. There will be disruption in the area during this work period but we will endeavour to keep this to an absolute minimum.

Update by Ryan Lloyd

Hi everyone

Please be aware that will be an access restriction on the 1st November 2016 to carry out the essential dam installation at the boat basin end of the lock. We are aiming to complete the works and limit the closure to between 9:30am - 11:30am. We apologise in advance for any distruption we may cause and we really appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Thank you

Hi all

The first timber gate has now been built and lifted into a temporary position, ready to be installed in December. The public have been fantastic during the works and the site team were able to meet the proposed times with very little disruption. We're all now praying for the weather to be kind!

Please be aware that we are planning to carryout the 2nd lift next Wednesday 19th October between 9:30am - 11:30am where there will be restrictions of access on Lock Hill, similar to shown on the photo below.

Have a good weekend all. Keep an eye out for more updates!

Thanks, Ryan

Good morning everyone

Work is now progressing and from Monday 10th October, Hargreaves Lock Gates of Halifax will be on site to build and install a new set of timber mitre gates, replacing the existing gates at the boat basin end of the lock. To isolate and drain the lock for the timber gate replacement, a steel sheet piled wall will be installed. This will be starting on the 1st November 2016.

We are aiming to complete this part of the project by end of December 2016

During this period, an area alongside the lock will be cordoned off. We apologise in advance for any disruption this may cause but please let us know if you have any concerns.

Thank you for your continued support

Good morning all

As you will now see we have the site established, image below.  Its been a busy few days for both site activity with deliveries and vehicular movement as well as plenty of public activity!

Thanks for being patient during the deliveries of the welfare facilities, as usual if you have any questions please dont hesitate to contact me.

We will be displaying a site activity board on the outside of our compound which will detail general movements and also show any potetntial cranes on site which may cause access restricitions from time to time as disussed at the community event in August.

Thanks

Hi everyone

The installation phase starting on the 5th September 2016 is soon approaching. We have received the main sea gate and other associated parts, ready to be installed at Heybridge, which are shown below. Each gate section weighs approximately 8 tonnes and each stoplog approximately 6 Tonnes each.

The hydraulic cylinder is being stored and exercised in a factory in Middlesbrough. This will be installed later on in the project, as part of the main gate assembly.

The timber mitres gates have been fabricated ready to be installed on site, replacing the existing upstream gates.

A public meeting is being held at Heybridge Basin in the Old Ship Inn on the 11th August 2016 between 15:00hrs and 19:00hrs which you are most welcome to attend.

Please keep checking the webpage for more updates!

Update by Paul Grimwood

Hi everyone.

This is the first project update for the Heybridge Basin Sea Gate Replacement project.

I'm Paul Grimwood and I am the Essex & Suffolk Water Project Manager for this scheme. I and the rest of the team will be posting updates through the planning and construction stages of this interesting project. The project team is made up of many people and organisations since this job started. There is a 'Meet the Team' tab on the front page that introduces some of them.

The old steel sea gate was successfully removed at the end of last year to enable structural, dimensional and visual surveys of the existing concrete structure. This information fed in to the detailed design of the new gate, which is a like for like replacement except for a few improvements including a hydraulic cylinder drive system in place of the original electric chain winch. The new gate design can be seen on the front page of this site.

The new gate has been manufactured by a company in Cardiff and will shortly be delivered to our site in Langford in preparation for its installation later this year.

As part of this project, we will also be replacing the upstream timber mitre gates. These will be made in Yorkshire and delivered to site in kit form and put together on the lock side before being craned in to place.

We are intending to start on site as soon as the school summer holidays are over this year and complete all work by March 2017. You will also see us around site over the summer months undertaking further planning and investigative work although there will be no actual construction work.

When we do start on site, there will be a number of mid week lock closures during September and October so there will be some boat usage restrictions. A full lock closure will commence from the 1st of November 2016 and run through to February / March 2017. We are still developing the detailed works programme so I cannot be specific about dates at this time.

As I said, we will be providing updates on this Portal so please do keep checking to keep advised of what we're doing. Also, please feel free to post a comment if you like and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We will be holding a 'Meet the Neighbours' session during the summer where we will present the scheme and be on hand to discuss the project with you.

Kind regards

Paul
