GENERAL PROJECT

Layer WTW Enhancements

To ensure Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) can continue to deliver excellent quality water, we are planning the replacement of our sandwashing plant at Layer Water Treatment Works. The new sandwasher will be located in a new purpose-built yard to the west of the existing site.

Project updates

Update by David Mortemore

Good morning everyone - I hope you're all well and had a great weekend?

The information advised in the last update, which I have removed to avoid confusion explained the road clousre was 12th to 13th September. For clarity - the road closure is 12th to 13th August 2023.

Therefore, the updated message is.....

To progress with the planned work,  we need to close Church Road in front of our Treatment Works, opposite the tennis court, for a short while to install a new drain pipe.  The road closure is planned for Saturday 12th - Sunday 13th August and a diversion route via Layer Breton will be in place.

We will do all we can to minimise the inconvenience to residents and visitors to Layer, and would like to thank you in advance for your patience while we complete this essential work.

Please let us know if there is anything we can help you with.

Best wishes - David

Update by Amanda Hunt

Hi everyone

Just a quick update.

We have now received planning permission to go ahead with construction of the new sandwasher and we will be starting work as soon as we have discharged our pre-start planning conditions and made some final ecological and environmental checks.

This could be as early as two weeks from now and we’ll keep you updated on this portal when we have confirmed dates.  We expect the majority of work to be completed this year, with final installation and commissioning early in 2024.

Best wishes

The Project Team

Update by Kay Silver

Works to lay the water supply pipes to the new yard have started in the field behind the treatment works.  This work is completed under our statutory  pipelaying powers.  We have also cleared vegetation at the Layer Pit ready for the new outfall.  The main contract to build the sand yard should be placed by the end of March as planned, after which I will be able to confirm dates for the main works.

Our planning application has been submitted and will be available on the Colchester Borough Council's planning portal in the near future, subject to Council validation.
