River Stour (Brantham)

The Eel Regulation Compliance project at Brantham will comprise the installation of eel friendly screening equipment at our abstraction point on the river Stour. The work is driven by the need for Essex & Suffolk Water to comply with the Eels Regulations (2009) and improving the biodiversity value in the river Stour.

Project updates

Update by Dan Wilson

Work at site has now been completed and the new screen is functioning well to protect eels, the environment we work in and provide screened water to support our Abberton reservoir. As a reminder, this project was driven by our commitment to enhancing the biodiversity value of the rivers we abstract from and comply with the assocaited legislation, in this instance, the Eel Regulation (2009). Lets hope that this project contributes to an increase in the number of eel in the River Stour.

May we take this opportuninty to thank the residents of Brantham for their understanding and patience through the extended construction period.

Hi Everyone, Progress on site has been slower than planned due to some procurement activities. We have however made some good progress installing pipework, electrical equipment, walkways and handrails on site. The site will be a little quiet between now and mid January when we expect the new intake screen to arrive on site. We will leave the site secure and make sure access around the site entrance is free and clear for road users.

Work to construct the concrete base and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) kiosk has been completed site successfully. We have also installed the new MCC (Motor Control Centre) within the new kiosk that will control the new rotating band screen. We will shortly be taking delivery of the new eel screen onto site and installing this onto the river front. The work so far has been blessed with good weather that has enabled us to make good progress and keep the local roads clear of mud and debris, reducing our impact on residents and other stakeholders.

Work is well underway on site now and our contractors IWS have set up offices and storage cabins that will be on site for the duration of the work. We have also completed the excavation for the concrete slab on top of which will sit our green GRP kiosk housing the control panel for the new screen. Other work on site has included the excavation and duct laying for the new power cable between the access gate and the new kiosk.

Unfortunately we have also had a break in on site. Thieves broke into our storage cabin and stole a small portable generator and a disc cutter. We have increased security on site and remain vigilant.

Hi All, We have been made aware of some additional requirements on site that has pushed our construction start date on site backwards to the 27th March 17. The additional requirements wont change the appearance of our proposals but they will mean our construction work has even less imapct on the ecology in the area. If you see any of our staff in the are please dont hesitate to talk to them about our work in the area. Daniel.

Happy Christmas to everyone taking the opportunity to look at this community portal. Before we all take time off over the festive period I thought I should share with you that our latest programme indicates our Framework Contractor, IWS, will begin on site in early February. The work will include the civil work to construct the chamber for the backwash pumps and a plinth for our new GRP kiosk. We anticpate the screen will be delivered to site in March for installation into the river.

Once again, happy Christmas to you all. Daniel Wilson.

New Power Supply - As part of the upgrade works to install new screens on the intake on the River Stour we have commissioned UK Power Networks to install a new power supply. This work is now substantially completed and has included the provision of a new GRP kiosk on the edge of the site. From here the power will be routed towards the river and our new screens.
