River Stour (Brantham)

The Eel Regulation Compliance project at Brantham will comprise the installation of eel friendly screening equipment at our abstraction point on the river Stour. The work is driven by the need for Essex & Suffolk Water to comply with the Eels Regulations (2009) and improving the biodiversity value in the river Stour.

Planned works

THE BRANTHAM INTAKE WILL REMAIN OPERATIONAL THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE WORK WITH ONLY A SHORT SHUTDOWN REQUIRED. THIS SHUTDOWN WILL HAVE NO IMPACT ON OUR ABILITY TO SUPPLY WATER OR ANY NOTABLE IMPACT OUTSIDE OF THE SITE.

The main construction work will require us to install a new steel frame on the front of the existing concrete structure. This will be undertaken using divers in the water with specialist underwater equipment. Once the steel frame is installed we will be ready to use a crane to lower the new screen into place, inside the steel frame. We will also erect a small kiosk, adjacent to the existing kiosk to house a small electrical panel and some instrumentation that will allow us to operate the screen and monitor the river level. A number of small pumps will be installed within a concrete box behind the screen that will allow us to automatically wash the screen.
