Trinity Broads

Essex & Suffolk Water, in conjunction with our partners MWH, Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Broads Authority and Norfolk Wildlife Trust, will be mud pumping specific areas of the Trinity Broads during the winter of 2016/17.

The mud pumping work in all of the Trinity Broads is now complete. There will be activity continuing throughout May while the equipment is moved out of the Trinity Broads, mainly using the Rollesby sailing club site. Pipes and other floating objects will be moored on the opposite side of Rollesby Broad until they are removed entirely. We would be grateful if this equipment can be avoided by water users. Thank you for your understanding while these important works have been undertaken from all of the team.

The mud pumping works have now demobilised from Filby Broad and are now active in Ormesby Broad. There are 3 areas of Ormesby Broad to be pumped in the coming weeks and the work currently being carried out is at the southern-most of these areas (shown by the solid red dot below). A long (1km) floating pipe is taking the sediment to its storage location in a field immediately north of Ormesby Broad. Once again, water users are kindly asked to stay clear of this pipe which is clearly visible thanks to the yellow floats along its length. The works in Ormesby Broad will continue throughout March and into April after which the works will move to Lily Broad and to Ormesby Little Broad. Please watch out for more information on the timing of these remaining areas.

Mud pumping has now commenced in Filby Broad. One area in Filby Broad is largely complete and the works will now focus on the area in the Muckfleet mouth. Advanced works will also be taking place in Ormesby Broad, Ormesby Little Broad and Lily Broad to install floating curtains ahead of the mud pumping works in those locations. Floating pipes will be seen at various locations during the works such as in the photograph of Filby Broad. Water users are kindly asked to stay clear of these; the yellow floats should make them clearly visible.

The mud pumping vessel is now ready to be deployed. The recent cold snap, however, has left large portions of the Broads frozen and our vessel isn't able to navigate through the ice. We are now waiting for a thaw so that the works can begin in earnest.

Mobilisation has begun. Works are currently being carried out to assemble the dredging platform at NSSA Filby sailing club. Noise will be kept to a minimum but there is a JCB on site to safely lift items during the assembly phase. Once complete, the vessel will move out to the first dredging location on Filby Broad.
